ABOUT THE ONE TO ONE PROGRAM
The first ONE to ONE Reading program began in Vancouver in 1989 and has expanded to operate through local literacy societies in over twenty communities throughout British Columbia.  It is offered in all four local elementary schools. ONE to ONE provides children with an opportunity to practice their reading in an environment where it is okay to take risks, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace.  Each student selected for the program spends approximately 30 minutes two to four times a week with volunteer tutors.

Each ONE to ONE tutor volunteers one hour per week to the program during one or both of the twelve week sessions. The fall session runs from October to January and the spring session runs from January to May , The Salt Spring Literacy Society provides all the tutors with materials, training and on going support.

A majority of the tutors return each school year but there is always a need for more tutors. It is a great opportunity for anyone who loves to listen to children read.  Here is a comment from one of this year’s tutors.

“It has been a great pleasure to be a part of the One to One reading program.  I've spent my career as a classroom teacher and I know how difficult it is to provide the kind of individualized attention these children are getting through this program.  Whether the students are struggling or gifted readers, I have worked with both in the program, they all benefit enormously from the one on one attention they receive. It is rewarding to witness their progress whether it be improved expression and fluency or an enhanced ability to discuss a story. I truly enjoy their fresh perspective and their eagerness to participate.”
