Welcome to an exciting new school year at Fernwood Elementary!  Our staff is committed to being responsive to your child's individual needs and providing a safe, caring environment in which to love learning every day. 

Keeping in touch with your child’s teacher and the school community is an important way to support your child at school.  There are many ways to keep in touch.  Please make sure that your email address is up to date (send changes to lashford@sd64.org) and make sure you have bookmarked our School News webpage at www.fernwood.sd64.bc.ca.  There is also a Fernwood Elementary School Facebook page that is regularly updated.  Most teachers also provide a home folder with regular newsletters, notices, home reading records, and other important information – please check your child’s backpack each day!

Parental involvement in your child’s education can take many forms.  Fernwood Elementary sees parents as true partners in education, the school and home supporting each other to see children reach their full potential.  To be an education partner you can:

• Keep in close communication with the teacher and school
• Read to your child and have them read to you each night for at least 20 minutes
• Make sure your child is well rested and prepared for school each day - a regular bed time helps
• Ask your child specific questions about their day at school (rather than "how was school?")
• Limit the amount of screen time to LESS than 60 minutes per day
• Provide opportunities for your child to experience unstructured play outdoors
• Arrange for play dates with other children from the school
• Volunteer in your child’s classroom, or in the school PAC
